H.T. Chen & Dancers – a leading Asian-American dance company based in New York City, returns to Cincinnati for a one-week dance residency from August 5 – 10, 2007. Company members, Li-Ann Lim and Yu-Chien Cheng will teach two sessions: morning workshops for children ages 6-9, and afternoon workshops for children ages 10 and up. The residency will begin with a calligraphy lesson for participants and family members, followed by daily classes in technique, repertory and composition, and culminate with a student showcase on Friday evening, August 10th. Guided by company members, students will have the opportunity to explore elements of traditional Chinese culture through calligraphy and the use of dance props. They will also explore traditional and contemporary dance techniques, learn company repertoire, and compose dance studies that allow them to bring theirown cultural heritage and dance practices to the imaginative investigation of movement. H.T. Chen’s choreography has seamlessly blended the strength and precision of traditional Chinese martial arts and dance with the freedom of American modern dance techniques. Technique classes, taught by H.T. Chen & Dancers’ company members, will combine these dance forms and emphasize concentration, control, release, and the shift of weight.
