Tells the story of a beautiful doll called
Coppélia, a young couple, and the town's toy maker.
This fanciful ballet appeals to everyone who's young at heart
with its magical toys, high jinks and romance. Swanhilda and Franz
plan to be married until Franz's flirtatious ways ignite trouble.
He shows interest in the lovely Coppélia and causes
his fiancée to doubt his faithfulness. Determined to confront
the situation, Swanhilda sneaks into the toy maker's shop to see
Coppélia. Imagine her surprise when she discovers
that Coppélia is a doll!
Coppélia
has long remained one of the jewels of the classical ballet repertoire,
as it represents one of the few true comedies of ballet. Some
also argue that Coppélia represents the first "feminist"
ballet, breaking as it did with the romantic tradition of portraying
the female heroine as an otherworldly creature and replacing it
with a witty, earthy woman who knows how to get her way with a
womanizing fiancé.
The ballet has
been in the repertoire of many companies world-wide for many decades.
The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo kept Coppélia in
its repertoire for almost the entire life of the company, sometimes
presenting the entire full-length production, sometimes only the
first two acts (as most of the story is contained therein), occasionally
presenting just the third act as a divertissement.

ballet tech ohio is delighted to have
guest choreographer, Malcolm Burn of Richmond Ballet to re-stage
Frederic Franklin’s Coppélia. Malcolm recently re-staged
the ballet for a successful production at Richmond Ballet.
Frederic Franklin stated: “Stoner Winslett,
Artistic Director of the Richmond Ballet, has produced a fabulous
reproduction of Coppélia - I could not have done
it better. Associate Artistic Director, Malcolm Burn is
marvelous to work with and has made some delightful additions”.
"There are a
couple of things to it that are just brilliant." Burn particularly
admires the way the froth is leavened by moments of pathos. And
the music by Leo Delibes matches the action on the stage in a
way that had never before been seen. "At the time,
it was absolutely the best ballet score ever written. It probably
inspired all the subsequent ballet scores."
